Fed: Anzacs defined Australian attitudes: Howard
SYDNEY, April 20 AAP - The Anzac legend had defined the attitude of Australians, Prime
Minister John Howard said today.
Speaking on the eve of his trip to Gallipoli, Mr Howard said the first Anzac day had
been a tragic waste of young lives.
"I don't think there's been an experience in the history of our country that has had
a greater symbolic and spiritual impact than the events surrounding the first Anzac Day,"
Mr Howard told Radio 2UE.
"I think they have defined the attitudes of Australians, they have taught us more about
how we see ourselves, the sort of values that mattered to us.
"With the passage of time, what it represents has become even more hallowed for Australians
of all ages," he said.
Mr Howard flies out of Sydney tomorrow to visit Gallipoli and the battlefields of the Somme.
