VIC: RSPCA threat to minister over advice to poison birds =2
Later today, the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, which advised the Victorian government
on humane policies, unanimously condemned the minister's plan.
The committee resolved that poisoning was cruel, presented food safety problems and could
kill other native species which were not responsible for crop damage.
It also demanded the government provide assistance, including funding, for a proper bird
management program.
Dr Wirth said Mrs Tehan's own department was proceeding with plans to provide farmers with
expert contractors to net and gas problem birds as a short-term measure, despite the
minister's poisoning plans.
