NSW: Drivers must remain patient on the drive home: Police

New South Wales police have urged drivers to remain vigilant over the closing stages
of the Easter long weekend to ensure there are no further fatalities on the state's roads.

Inspector DAVE EVANS says motorists returning from holidays need to slow down, drive
to the conditions and remember that driver fatigue is a possibility.

He says regular rest stops and allowing plenty of time to reach the destination are
important for maximising road safety.

Inspector EVANS says the deaths of three children since Thursday highlights the need
to be extra cautious when children are around.

He says drivers must remember that children can be unpredictable.

Police and the Roads and Traffic Authority stepped up their road safety campaigns this
Easter with Operation Tortoise, following a tragic Christmas/New Year holiday period when
40 people died on NSW roads.

Since Operation Tortoise officially began on Thursday, there have been 209 people injured,
365 charged with drink driving and more than 10,000 people issued with speeding fines.
